Cristiano Ronaldo Plays Full 90 Minutes Again as Roberto Martinez Defends Portugal Captain After Colombia Draw

Roberto Martinez Defends Cristiano Ronaldo After Portugal’s Draw With Colombia

Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has once again defended Cristiano Ronaldo after the veteran striker completed another full 90 minutes in Portugal’s 0-0 draw against Colombia at the FIFA World Cup.

Despite criticism over Ronaldo’s playing time, Martinez made it clear that the decision was based on performance data and not public opinion. The result saw Portugal finish second in Group K, setting up a Round of 32 clash against Croatia.

Ronaldo Completes All 270 Group Stage Minutes

At 41 years old, Cristiano Ronaldo continues to lead Portugal on the biggest stage. The match against Colombia marked his 25th World Cup appearance and his third consecutive full match of the tournament.

Although Ronaldo worked hard throughout the game, he found it difficult to influence the result. He managed just one shot on target from three attempts, recorded only 35 touches, and was caught offside twice.

So far in the tournament, Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, and Renato Veiga are the only Portugal outfield players to have played every minute of the group stage.

Roberto Martinez Explains His Decision

Speaking after the match, Martinez dismissed comparisons between Ronaldo and other star players who were rested during the final group games.

He explained that Portugal closely monitors every player’s physical condition using live performance data during matches.

According to Martinez, Ronaldo showed no signs of physical or mental fatigue and was fully capable of completing the game. He also added that squad rotation could happen in future matches if required, just as it would for any other player.

His comments suggest that Ronaldo remains an important part of Portugal’s plans heading into the knockout rounds.

Portugal will now take on Croatia in the Round of 32 after finishing second in Group K.

The match will be played on July 2 at Toronto Stadium and carries emotional significance for the Portuguese squad. It comes one day before the first anniversary of the passing of Diogo Jota.

Martinez said the team continues to remember Jota every day and hopes to honor his legacy with a successful World Cup campaign.

The coach described Jota as one of the team’s biggest inspirations and said the players are determined to fight for the trophy in his memory.

Colombia Finish Top of the Group

While Portugal settled for second place, Colombia secured the top position in Group K after an impressive group stage campaign.

The South American side remained unbeaten and extended their strong record against European opponents at the World Cup.

Colombia dominated large parts of the match against Portugal, creating 24 shots, their highest total in a World Cup match since detailed records began in 1966.

Their expected goals (xG) reached 1.70, compared to Portugal’s 0.93. However, poor finishing prevented them from claiming all three points.

Nestor Lorenzo Wants Better Finishing

Colombia head coach Nestor Lorenzo praised his team’s overall performance but admitted they must become more clinical in front of goal.

He warned that stronger opponents in the knockout rounds would punish missed chances.

Even so, Lorenzo remained pleased with his players’ effort and was satisfied that Colombia finished at the top of the group.

When asked whether expectations back home had increased, Lorenzo acknowledged that supporters are dreaming of World Cup success. However, he stressed that the team must continue taking one match at a time.

Match Statistics

Final Thoughts

Portugal may not have delivered their best attacking display, but Roberto Martinez remains fully confident in Cristiano Ronaldo’s importance to the team.

Meanwhile, Colombia head into the next round full of confidence after topping their group, though improving their finishing will be key if they want to make a deep run in the tournament.
