Lionel Messi Makes World Cup History in Argentina’s 3-1 Win Over Jordan
Lionel Messi once again proved why he is considered one of the greatest footballers of all time. The Argentina captain delivered another historic performance as his team defeated Jordan 3-1 to finish their FIFA World Cup Group J campaign with a perfect record.
Although Messi started the match on the bench, he made an immediate impact after coming on in the second half. His brilliant free-kick sealed Argentina’s victory and helped him set another incredible World Cup record.
Argentina Finish the Group Stage in Style
Argentina controlled the first half and looked confident from the opening whistle. Giovani Lo Celso opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a superb free-kick before Lautaro Martinez doubled the lead from the penalty spot just before halftime.
Jordan refused to give up after the break. Mousa Al Tamari reduced the deficit by finishing a dangerous cross from Ehsan Haddad, giving his side hope of a comeback.
However, Messi quickly ended those hopes. After winning a free-kick just outside the penalty area, the Argentine captain curled a beautiful shot around the wall and into the net to make it 3-1.
Messi Creates More World Cup History
Messi’s goal was not just important for the result. It also added another chapter to his remarkable World Cup career.
The Argentina captain became the first player to score in seven consecutive FIFA World Cup appearances. During that run, he has scored 11 goals, including five during Argentina’s successful 2022 World Cup campaign.
The 39-year-old also extended his World Cup tally to 19 goals, strengthening his place among the tournament’s greatest goalscorers. He currently leads the Golden Boot race, staying ahead of stars like Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Vinicius Junior, and Erling Haaland.

Scaloni Left Speechless by Messi
Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni admitted that Messi continues to surprise everyone, even after so many years at the highest level.
Speaking after the match, Scaloni said it is becoming difficult to describe Messi’s performances because he keeps producing special moments whenever he plays.
The coach also revealed that Messi could have completed the full 90 minutes but preferred to give his teammates valuable playing time while managing his fitness for the knockout rounds.
Scaloni praised Messi’s mindset, saying the captain is focused on helping the team rather than chasing personal records.

Argentina’s Squad Shows Its Strength
With first place already secured, Scaloni rotated his squad and made nine changes to the starting lineup.
Several squad players impressed, including Giovani Lo Celso, who scored on his World Cup debut. His free-kick made him only the second Argentine player this century to score directly from a free-kick at the World Cup after Messi.
The Argentina manager was pleased with the performance of the entire squad and said every player proved they are ready whenever called upon.
According to Scaloni, giving every player World Cup experience has always been one of his goals, and the team’s display against Jordan showed the depth of Argentina’s squad.
Argentina Prepare for Cape Verde Challenge
Argentina will now face tournament debutants Cape Verde in the Round of 16 at Miami Stadium.
Cape Verde have enjoyed an impressive first World Cup campaign. They advanced from a difficult group containing Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia without losing a single match.
Their achievement makes them the first World Cup debutant since Slovakia in 2010 to reach the knockout stage and the first African debutant to do so since Ghana in 2006.
Despite Argentina being favourites, Scaloni warned that Cape Verde should not be underestimated. He described them as a fast and talented team capable of causing problems for any opponent.
Final Thoughts
Argentina enter the knockout stage full of confidence after winning all of their group matches. While the team’s overall performance was impressive, Lionel Messi once again stole the spotlight with another unforgettable display.
As the World Cup continues, Argentina will hope their legendary captain can keep making history and lead them one step closer to another world title.
