America’s Highest-Paid CEOs Ranked: Executive compensation in America has reached levels that are difficult to imagine. Every year, public companies reveal how much their top leaders earn, and the numbers continue to break records. While most people think CEOs become wealthy through high salaries, the truth is very different.
According to recent executive compensation data, the average S&P 500 CEO earned around $22.8 million in annual compensation. At the same time, the average CEO-to-worker pay ratio climbed beyond 312:1, meaning many chief executives earned hundreds of times more than the typical employee.
These figures have renewed debates about corporate governance, executive incentives, and the growing gap between leadership rewards and employee wages.
America’s Highest-Paid CEOs
Several executives stood far above the rest because of enormous stock awards and performance-based compensation rather than traditional salaries.
Elon Musk (Tesla)
Elon Musk remains the biggest outlier in executive compensation. His compensation package has been valued in the hundreds of billions of dollars across recent award cycles, making it so unusually large that some labor reports analyze CEO pay separately without including his figures.
Shankh Mitra (Welltower)
Welltower CEO Shankh Mitra earned an estimated $821.1 million, largely driven by equity awards tied to long-term company performance and shareholder value.
Kaz Nejatian (Opendoor Technologies)
Kaz Nejatian ranked among the highest-paid executives with a compensation package worth approximately $741.1 million, reflecting significant stock-based incentives.
Niraj Shah (Wayfair)
Wayfair co-founder Niraj Shah received around $280.8 million, mostly through performance stock units rather than cash salary.
Mahkam Zanganeh (Summit Therapeutics)
Biotechnology executive Mahkam Zanganeh earned roughly $246 million, highlighting how pharmaceutical companies increasingly rely on equity-based executive rewards.

Other Top Earners
Several well-known business leaders also joined the list of America’s highest-paid CEOs.
- Hock E. Tan (Broadcom): About $205 million
- Peter Gassner (Veeva Systems): Around $172 million
- Stephen Schwarzman (Blackstone): More than $125 million
Although these amounts are enormous, most of the compensation came from stock awards and long-term incentive plans rather than fixed salaries.
Why CEO Salaries Tell Only Part of the Story
One surprising fact about executive compensation is that the salary itself is often the smallest part of the package.
Many CEOs receive base salaries between $1 million and $2.5 million, while some earn even less. The real wealth comes from:
- Stock options
- Restricted stock units (RSUs)
- Performance-based equity awards
- Long-term incentive plans
When company shares rise in value, these awards can become worth hundreds of millions of dollars without the executive receiving that amount as immediate cash income.
Why Companies Use Stock-Based Compensation
Boards of directors often design executive pay to encourage long-term company growth. Instead of paying executives entirely in cash, companies tie rewards to financial targets such as:
- Revenue growth
- Profit performance
- Shareholder returns
- Market value milestones
Supporters argue that this approach aligns CEO interests with investors. However, critics believe it can encourage excessive focus on short-term stock performance.
The Growing CEO-to-Worker Pay Gap
Executive compensation has grown much faster than employee wages over the past few decades.
Labor organizations, including the AFL-CIO, have repeatedly highlighted how CEO pay has increased dramatically while many workers continue to face rising housing costs, inflation, and higher living expenses.
