Morocco Beat Netherlands in Dramatic World Cup Round of 32
Morocco booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after a dramatic 3-2 penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands following a 1-1 draw after extra time at Estadio Monterrey.
Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou delivered another unforgettable performance, making the crucial save during the shootout before Ismael Saibari calmly converted the winning penalty. The victory sends Morocco into a last-16 clash with co-hosts Canada.
A Tight First Half Filled With Goalkeeping Brilliance
Both teams created promising opportunities during a closely contested opening half, but the goalkeepers stole the spotlight.
Netherlands goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen produced an outstanding reflex save to deny Neil El Aynaoui from close range after a dangerous corner. He later tipped Achraf Hakimi’s powerful long-range effort over the crossbar.
At the other end, Bounou responded with an excellent save of his own, keeping out Micky van de Ven’s fierce strike and ensuring the game remained goalless at halftime.
Morocco Controlled the Second Half
Morocco looked the more dangerous side after the break and came close to taking the lead several times.
Achraf Hakimi rattled the crossbar in the 52nd minute before Van de Ven made a superb last-ditch block to deny the Moroccan captain moments later.
Despite Morocco’s dominance, it was the Netherlands who struck first.
Substitute Wout Weghorst changed the match almost immediately after coming on in the 71st minute. His perfectly directed header released Crysencio Summerville, who squared the ball across the box for Cody Gakpo to finish into an empty net.
Issa Diop Rescues Morocco in Stoppage Time
Just as the Netherlands looked set to advance, Morocco found a dramatic equaliser deep into stoppage time.
Chemsdine Talbi delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area, where Issa Diop rose between Virgil van Dijk and Teun Koopmeiners to guide a brilliant header beyond Verbruggen in the 91st minute.
The goal sparked huge celebrations and forced the match into extra time.

Verbruggen Keeps the Netherlands Alive
Extra time produced very few clear chances, but Morocco nearly completed the comeback.
Soufiane Rahimi dribbled through on goal with only the goalkeeper to beat, but Verbruggen produced another outstanding save to keep Dutch hopes alive and send the match to penalties.
Bounou Shines Again in the Shootout
The penalty shootout was packed with drama.
Teun Koopmeiners confidently converted the opening penalty before Neil El Aynaoui and Justin Kluivert both struck the woodwork.
Quinten Timber fired wide for the Netherlands, while Hakimi also hit the post for Morocco.
The decisive moment arrived when Yassine Bounou brilliantly saved Crysencio Summerville’s penalty. Ismael Saibari then stepped up and calmly scored the winning spot-kick, securing a famous victory for Morocco.

Morocco Continue Their World Cup Dream
Morocco fully deserved their place in the next round after producing the stronger overall performance.
The Atlas Lions created 11 shots and generated 1.4 expected goals (xG), including five Opta-defined big chances. Their attacking approach consistently troubled the Dutch defence, with Hakimi playing a leading role throughout the match.
The victory also continues Morocco’s impressive record in World Cup penalty shootouts. They have now won both shootouts they have contested, having also defeated Spain on penalties during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Confidence will be high as they prepare to face Canada for a place in the quarter-finals.
Netherlands Fall Short Again
The Netherlands struggled to establish control for long periods of the game.
Managerial changes in formation saw the Dutch begin with a back five for the first time since March 2024, but the tactical switch failed to produce the desired result.
The Oranje managed only six shots across 120 minutes, generating just 0.23 expected goals (xG).
Cody Gakpo’s goal briefly looked enough to send his side through, but Morocco’s late equaliser changed the momentum completely.
Despite the defeat, Bart Verbruggen delivered an excellent individual display with five important saves and nearly denied Morocco during the penalty shootout.
